Fred Thompson Still Testing Waters

Fred Thompson, the former U.S senator from Tennessee, is still in two minds about joining the presidential race. And the much awaited announcement of Thompson formally jumping into the fray has not come as yet.

However, the Law & Order actor has been preparing for a nationally televised Republican debate and he has also recently named a communication director and a political director.

According to aides, the big reason for Thompson delaying his candidacy is because he would be required to reveal the contributions and expenses made towards his campaign. Thompson is reluctant to disclose any of his personal or campaign’s financial reports, a decision that is being strongly criticized by Democratic National Committee as a violation of campaign finance laws.

Many feel Thompson is being a hypocrite as he had strongly advocated reforms in campaign finance in 1997. Thompson even held hearings on Democrats campaign finance scandals during that period. According to Democrats, Thompson’s use of “testing the waters” exemption under the FEC regulations in not applicable to the funds raised for the campaign. However, Thompson’s advisers deny these allegations. According to them, a viable candidate for President is one who has the ability to raise sufficient funds, which is even recognized by FEC rules. It determines the charisma and the political strength of the leader throughout the nation.

According to Thompson’s advisers, no disclosure would be done regarding campaign finances until October 15, 2007, which is the due date for the report. However, Thompson’s campaign may make public its success in fundraising in conjunction with a formal announcement of Thompson’s candidacy.
