While the final episode didn’t go out with a bang “The Sopranos” still has a chance to make some noise after receiving 15 nominations for the 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The HBO mob series became the first cable show to ever win the Outstanding Drama Series in 2004 after missing out on the award in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and again in 2006.
“The Sopranos” wasn’t the only strike of gold for HBO as the made-for-TV movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” garnered the most nominations with 17.
Joining “The Sopranos” in the Outstanding Drama Series category are “Boston Legal,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Heroes,” and “House.”
Along with a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, “The Sopranos’ once again landed James Gandolfini an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series nomination while Edie Falco, who plays his wife, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Michael Imperioli received a nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and both Aida Turturro and Lorraine Bracco were nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for their work on “The Sopranos”
Gandolfini was joined by James Spader (Boston Legal), Hugh Laurie (House), Denis Leary (Rescue Me) and Kiefer Sutherland (24) in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Patricia Arquette (Medium) and Minnie Driver (The Richies) joined Falco in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
HBO also enjoyed success in the comedy category as “Entourage” was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. “Entourage” will be up against “The Office,” “30 Rock,” “Two and a Half Men,” “Ugly Betty.”
Steve Carell was nominated as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on “The Office” and Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) and Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men) were also nominated in the category that includes Tony Shalhoub (Monk) and Ricky Gervais (Extras).
“30 Rock” also landed Tina Fey an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series nomination. She’ll be joined by “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera, Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives).
The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented on September 16 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
