Barry Bonds drove the first pitch he saw from Chicago Cubs starter Ted Lilly high over the right-field fence and onto Sheffield Avenue to snap a hitless streak that hat reached 21 at-bats. The majestic blast was Bonds 18th of the season and moved him to within three of baseball’s most treasured record, Hank Aaron’s 755 career home runs.
Not satisfied with just breaking out of a slump Bonds returned to the box in the third and drove home two runs on a bases loaded single. By the sixth inning the Cubs elected to pitch around the slugger and Bonds walked for the 95th time this season, 19 more than any other player this season.
By the time Bonds stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh the Giants trailed 9-5 but the soon to be 43-year-old hit another bomb, this time to center on a 3-2 delivery from Will Ohman to pull San Francisco to 9-8. It gave Bonds 753 career home runs and moved him to within two of Hank Aaron.
Bonds didn’t make it to the plate a fifth time as Bob Howry closed the door on the Giants in the ninth, striking out Dave Roberts and Randy Winn and then getting Ryan Klesko to ground out to end the game.
