Passenger Trains Collide in Belgium, Death Toll Rising

A pair of passenger trains traveling during the morning rush hour near the Belgian capital of Brussels slammed head-on, leaving several people injured and reports of up to 25 dead.

The collision occurred shortly after one train apparently missed a stop signal around 8:30 am local time near the station in Buizingen, in the district of Halle. Upon impact several of the train carriages were sent upwards at an angle and tossed from the tracks as passengers were thrown violently inside.

Doctors were said to be treating victims on the scene and in some cases performing amputations as several passengers were trapped under the wreckage. As many as 300 passengers were on the two trains at the time of the collision.

As a result of the accident train services between Brussels and the UK as well as Paris have been cancelled until further notice.
