Somali State Minister for Defense Survives Assassination Attempt

Somali state minister for defense Yusuf Mohamed Siyad survived an assassination attempt by a suicide bomber who detonated a series of explosives that had been packed in his vehicle but failed to kill the government worker.

According to Siyad he was traveling in Mogadishu when the suicide bomber drove his vehicle toward his car. The blast killed the bomber and injured two guards who were protecting Siyad. Witnesses at the scene said two bystanders were killed in the attack. Shortly after the attack the Islamist rebel group al-Shabab claimed responsibility.

Siyad has said the attempt on his life will not prevent him from carrying out his duties as the Somali government continues to fight Islamist insurgents.
