Shortly after Iraq beat South Korea 4-3 in a penalty shootout in an Asia Cup semifinals match a pair of suicide bombers detonated explosive-filled vehicles in Baghdad killing at least 27 people and wounding more than 100.
Thousands of Iraqis took to the street after their national team advanced to the Asia Cup finals to be played in Jakarta on Sunday. Within moments of the revelers celebrating the victory a pair of blasts sent crowds scurrying for cover.
The first explosion took place near an ice-cream parlor in western Baghdad and killed at least 11 people while wounding another 60.
Less than an hour after the first blast another explosion rocked an Iraqi army checkpoint heavily populated by soccer fans. At least 16 people were killed in the second detonation while an additional 60 were believed to be injured.
