A top military commander for the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, has been captured in Pakistan according to U.S. officials.
According to those officials Mullah Baradar was captured earlier this month by Pakistan’s ISI intelligence service who were carrying out a raid on a madrassa near Karachi as part of a joint operation with U.S. forces.
Mullah Badarar was a major figure in the Taliban’s Afghan operations, developing long-term strategic military planning in the country. His capture is seen as a major blow to the Taliban’s efforts in southern Afghanistan, an area that has seen a major push by NATO forces.
Making the capture of Mullah Badarar even more significant is the fact that U.S. officials have said he is “providing intelligence.”
Despite the reports of Mullah Badarar’s capture the Taliban has denied those claims saying “He has not been captured. They want to spread this rumor just to divert the attention of people from their defeats in Marjah and confuse the public.”
