Kenyan Ministers Vow to Boycott Cabinet Meetings as Row Between President and PM Continues

Several Kenyan ministers loyal to Prime Minister Raila Odinga have said they will boycott cabinet meetings until a dispute with President Mwai Kibaki has been resolved.

While Kibaki and Odinga formed a coalition to end violence following the 2007 election the two remain bitter rivals. That carried over into Sunday as Odinga suspended two ministers who had been accused of corruption but Kibaki quickly overturned that decision, angering supporters of the prime minister.

Those supporters have said Odinga is no longer able to carry out his functions as prime minister and this could cause the coalition to collapse. Corruption has been a major problem inside Kenyan politics and Odinga allies have called Kibaki’s decision to reverse the suspensions a blow to anti-corruption efforts.

Odinga has called on former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to intervene in hopes he could help resolve the dispute.
