Ford Motor Co announced its plans to eradicate the second shift at a Flat Rock, Michigan assembly facility, eliminating 900 jobs. The plant is responsible for building the Ford Mustang and the Mazda 6. The facility, opened in 1987, is operated in conjunction with Mazda Motor Corp.
The shift will occur July 12 according to Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans.
The change should not be too hard on the workers at the plant most of who will be presented with alternative work options at other Ford plants. The Ford workers are represented by the auto union. Any who are not offered jobs at other plants will be given buyouts under union contracts.
In 2009, the plant in question produced approximately 102,000 cars.
Ford anticipated that output will increase in 2010 despite the second shift being eliminated.
