The European Union has renewed its sanctions against Zimbabwe after declaring the unity government has not done enough to institute reforms in the country.
While the government of Zimbabwe is headed by President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, bitter rivals during the country’s 2008 presidential election, the renewed sanctions only target people and firms associated with Mugabe.
Tsvangirai had urged the EU to ease the sanctions, saying another twelve months would only slow the progress that was being made. Despite the Movement for Democratic Change leader’s plea the EU has insisted the power-sharing deal with Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party has not produced enough results.
