Simeon Rice, one of the most dominant pass rushers of his era in the NFL, has been cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after failing a physical. He spent the last six seasons with the team, helping them win the Super Bowl in 2003.
Rice had shoulder surgery last season, but played like considerably disabled when he returned. He had a career-low two sacks and only 21 tackles.
Due to the results of the physical, it was determined that "he needed more time to recover", said Bucs General Manager Bruce Allen.
Rice has 121 career sacks, second of all current NFL players behind New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan. This season, Rice was set to receive $7.25 million. This offseason, the Buccaneers drafted Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams, rated the best defensive player in the draft. With this selection, Tampa Bay was better equipped to let Rice go, now that they have a budding superstar to take his place.
