Legendary Coach Bill Walsh Dies

Legendary coach Bill Walsh, the architect of the San Francisco 49ers' 1980s dynasty and creator of the West Coast offense, died today at age 75 of leukemia.

Walsh went 102-63-1 with the 49ers, winning 10 of his 14 postseason games, along with six division titles. He was named the NFL's Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1984, and was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.

As general manager of the 49ers, he oversaw San Francisco to two more Super Bowl titles. Walsh also coached Stanford during two terms over five seasons.

If the measure of a man is how many successful men come under him, Walsh is immeasurable. Coaches that served as assistants for Walsh include Dennis Green, Mike Holmgren, George Seifert and Bruce Coslet, while Tony Dungy played for him. Most of his assistants began to breed other a generation of great coaches under them, including Mike Shanahan, Jeff Fisher, Andy Reid, Jon Gruden, Pete Carroll, Steve Mariucci, and Brian Billick.
