Natalie Gulbis Sheds Anna Kournikova Comparisons with Win at Evian Masters

Natalie Gulbis had been hearing it for quite some time. The 24-year-old blonde had been attracting more attention for her looks than her golf game and that inevitably landed her in the same sentence as Anna Kournikova.

While most people wouldn’t mind their name being mentioned alongside Kournikova, for a female athlete it’s like the kiss of death. It’s the moment when people begin to recognize that while you may be the best looking player, you certainly aren’t the best player.

Those comparisons melted away for Gulbis on Sunday after she beat South Korea’s Jang Jeong on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff at the Evian Masters in France. For Gulbis, it was her first win in five years on the LPGA Tour.

After the victory Gulbis said “There has been a lot of hype in America with people asking if I was ever going to win. This is my sixth year and I have been waiting a long time. But I knew if I was patient it would eventually happen for me. This feels great to have done it at last.”
