Abbey Road Recording Studios Reported as Up for Sale

The iconic London recording studios, Abbey Road, has been put up for sale by EMI. EMI decline to comment on the possible sale of the studios, which were made legendary by the 1969 Beatles album of the same name.

The Financial Times reported that five people familiar with the situation have said EMI has been courting bidders for the studios at 3 Abbey Road in London. The sale could raise tens of millions of dollars, giving EMI a sigh of relief from its debt burden.

The Abbey Road brand name would be the key part to any sale if EMI is looking to raise a significant amount of funding. EMI and Abbey Road are preparing for the launch of a branded product range which will include clothing, bags and stationary.

In 1929 EMI bought the property and turned it into the recording studios. Sir Edward Elgar recorded “Land of Hope and Glory” in studio one with the London Symphony Orchestra back in 1931. This is the same studio the Pink Floyd recorded “Dark Side Of The Moon” at and of course the Beatles also recorded a large portion of their songs there.
