It has been twelve years in the making but the end was just the beginning for Bollywood icon Sanjay Dutt who will now face six years in prison for illegally obtaining weapons from the same men responsible for 1993’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai which left 257 dead.
The 48-year-old Dutt was convicted shortly after the Mumbai blasts for illegal possession of arms and ammunition and spent just over a year and a half in prison.
Released in 1994, Dutt returned to film and starred in several movies that earned positive reviews. He married Rhea Pillai but by 2005 the couple had divorced. In late 2006 Dutt’s legal problems mounted as he was found guilty under the Arms Act of possessing an illegal weapon. Dutt had remained free on bail up until today when he was sentenced to six years.
Dutt’s sentence surprised many who felt that India’s judicial system would bow to one of their most influential citizens. Instead, Judge Pramod Kode said “In no sense can this be said to be a minor offense” and went on to say Dutt displayed “scant respect for the law.”
