Famous Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to six years in jail on Tuesday after he was found guilty of getting illegal weapons from India’s most wanted men. The men, whom Dutt got the guns from, are blamed for bombings in Mumbai that killed 257 people in 1993.
Dutt, 48, is known for his anti-hero roles in films and has millions of fans in Bollywood, which is reportedly the world’s largest film industry.
Dutt was cleared of conspiracy charges on the bombing of India’s financial capital but was found guilty of the other charges. “The crime was not brutal, cruel, ghastly, in-human, not anti-social, not immoral, and did not result in any harm to anyone. It was an eminently dangerous act. With the punishment of a minimum of five years and a maximum of 10 years it can in no way be a minor offence or of a less grave nature,” said judge Pramod Kode.
Dutt approached to judge after his sentence and admitted he made a mistake. He requested time to surrender so he could talk to his daughter which is in the United States. Through out his legal battles, he has continued to have the support of millions of fans.
