US stocks were back on forth on Wednesday but closed with modest gains as investors considered mixed economic data that showed minor expansion alongside Federal Reserve reports that predicted a standstill in joblessness at its present 9.7 percent.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 40.43 points or 0.30 percent to 10,309.24 following Tuesday’s 150 plus point gains. Elsewhere, the tech-laden Nasdaq composite index rose 12.10 points or 0.55 percent to 2,226.29. The Standard & Poor's 500 index tacked on 4.63 points or 0.42 percent to 1,099.50.
