Mark McGwire Apologizes for Steroid Use

New Cardinals Hitting Coach Regrets Past

Mark McGwire is beginning a new phase of his life, but he is still making apologies for his previous steroid use. Last year, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa announced that McGwire would be the new hitting coach for the Cardinals. Shortly thereafter, in January of this year, McGwire publicly admitted that he had used performance-enhancing drugs during his career in the 90’s. Before then, he had long been suspected of using steroids, but he had never admitted to using steroids, even when he was subpoenaed in 2005 to testify at a congressional hearing. During his first day with the Cardinals, he reiterated his apology to reporters. McGwire is a 12-time All-Star Game selection and a World Series champion. In 1998, he broke Roger Maris’s long standing record of 61 single season home runs. McGwire scored 70.
