The Boston Red Sox shored up their bullpen on Tuesday with one of the most dominant closers of the past decade as Eric Gagne waived his no trade clause to join baseball’s best team.
The Red Sox traded lefthanded pitcher Kason Gabbard and minor league outfielder Engel Beltre and David Murphy to the Texas Rangers for their new setup man. Boston will also pick up $2.1 million in performance bonuses for Gagne.
Gagne had signed with the Rangers in December after eight years in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform. Gagne collected 55 saves in 2003 and earned the National League Cy Young award. The following year he saved another 45 saves but missed much of the next two years due to injuries.
From 2002-204 Gagne saved 152 games. This season with the Rangers Gagne had 16 saves and a 2.16 ERA.
