Alternative Methods are Sometimes Used in Addiction Treatment

Many people, including professionals, believe in and/or practice alternative treatment methods. One such method is called “holistic,” and is based on the principle that aspects of a person—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual—are connected. As a result of this, when a person is undergoing treatment of any type for any reason, it is felt that all of these areas should be addressed.

The holistic view of treatment does not mean that “conventional” treatment; that is, the administration of medications when warranted as well as other necessary measures, is not used. Rather, the entire process is done in such a way that each part of the treatment program is carried out in such a way as to complement all four areas.

The advantages of offering holistic rehab treatments are many. For one thing, holistic views on illness and addiction are often seen in Native American, Alaskan Native, and other cultures, some of which, for different reasons, may be more prone to addiction and abuse. For this reason, there may be reluctance on the part of these individuals to seek help, simply because they are afraid their beliefs and practices will be ridiculed or even ignored.

Drug treatment facilities that offer holistic rehab treatments can be very influential in helping them recognize and overcome addictions. When a person who follows a certain cultural belief knows that he or she will be accepted with no reservations or prejudice, this can go a long way in persuading them to seek the help they may so desperately need.

Holistic rehab treatments are becoming more popular and more widespread among all persons, no matter what culture. Because addiction does affect a person physically and mentally, it is not a stretch to see where holistic methods can actually be very useful in the treatment program.

Once a person’s physical condition has been assessed, and, if necessary, taken care of, then holistic methods can be implemented for the remainder of the rehab program. Counseling can help one deal with the mental and emotional effects that the abuse and addiction have had on the patient, while spiritual help can provide a sense that one is not alone in the battle.

Drug and alcohol rehab options that include both conventional and holistic methods as part of alcohol rehab steps are available. Some provide both; others may only provide one type of service. Someone who is seeking help who believes in and practices holistic treatment can find a facility that will consider one’s personal considerations.
