Peruse the various polls offered on the USA Election Polls website and you will be treated to names you probably have not heard much bandied about. For example, unless you live in Delaware, you probably have not heard of that state’s senior senator Joe Biden who is seeking the democratic presidential nomination from his party. While not a hot button issue – yet – Mr. Biden’s failure to support tort reform and reject stricter bankruptcy laws could have far reaching consequences if he were elected president. Yet considering that these views are very much in line with many republicans, the notion to simply ignore him would be akin to ignoring an entire voting block.
On the other side of the aisle, consider Fred Thompson who is the current senator for the state of Tennessee. Even though he is a republican, he is pro-choice which makes him rife for controversy but also an important representative when considering the voters for whom the abortion issue is the hot button issue of the day.
When comparing these two politicians it becomes obvious why ignoring the “he can’t win” candidates hurts American politics. Not only does such arrogance turn off those voters who are not staunchly committed to voting in the first place – there are not that many around – but it also effectively silences large segments of the population that deserve to be heard. While a “can’t win candidate” may not receive the nod for the presidential nomination, failure to take them seriously will also harm other politicians: they will be blindsided by those who might be stalking horses and thus incapable of dealing with the issues that are being raised by the seemingly fringe candidate.
