Known primarily for his $400 haircuts, the former senator from North Carolina entered the 2004 presidential election as candidate for vice president. Yet what is largely forgotten is the fact that the Iowa caucus figures show that – had the caucus been a bit later – John Edwards might very well have carried the day instead of John Kerry. Polls listed on USA Election Polls’ website show that the southern states are ready to once again entertain Edwards’ bid for the democratic party’s nomination and with less than 4% behind Barack Obama, he may once again be a serious contender for at least the vice presidential role.
Speculators believe that if Al Gore will not throw his hat into the ring, John Edwards will have a good chance to carry the south and even though this will not be enough to receive the party’s nod, it might come in handy when the eventual nominee will pick a vice presidential candidate. By and large, at this point it appears that Hillary Clinton’s numbers are out of reach for Edwards, even if the latter should launch a most ambitious campaign.
As the primaries draw nearer, the message that Edwards wants the American people to hear is somewhat different than that of 2004. Embracing the fight against global warming and finding himself in agreement with a universal healthcare system, he promises to work hard on fighting poverty and ending the Iraq war. Careful to walk the treachery edge of buying into and propagating the Bush Derangement Syndrome while at the same time working to discredit the President’s handling of the various issues, Edwards remains a force to be reckoned with.
