Republican Mike Huckabee is the former governor of Arkansas and because of his occupation as minister within the Southern Baptist church wagging tongues have asserted that his only appeal will be in the faith based community. Yet national polls – as listed on the site for USA Election Polls – beg to differ and Fox News as well as Gallup show a steady set of figures for the hopeful candidate. Yet because of his single digit poll numbers, Mike Huckabee is quite frequently filed under the heading of “also ran” rather than being taken serious as a contender for the party’s nomination.
Huckabee showed his ability to deal with crises when Arkansas found itself housing more than 70,000 Hurricane Katrina evacuees and swift measures needed to be implemented in order to permit these individuals access to health care, shelter, and food. Yet his presidential ambitions may be overshadowed by his public statements favoring creationism as opposed to Darwinism and while those who would attempt to explain away such statements are silent, Huckabee himself cultivates the controversy by very clearly stating that he is speaking with a personal conviction not a professional ax to grind.
Just when supporters might have been looking for ways to get his name back into the news, the watchdogs who report on politicians’ financial policies cited his various tax increases to such an extent that several constituents wondered aloud whether they had mistakenly voted a democrat into office. At this point in time his support is holding strong and steady and it is unlikely that he will experience the same ups and downs that several of the front runners are experiencing and it is quite possible that the alleged controversy will provide the backdrop against which he will dialog with voters.
