Duane Chapman, having gained international fame for his show “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” can now breath easier after a Mexican court dropped charges against the 54-year-old.
The charges were in relation to a 2003 collar Chapman made while in Mexico. Along with his son Leland and fellow bounty hunter Tim Chapman, “Dog” captured Andrew Luster, the Max Factor heir who had fled the U.S. after he was convicted of rape. Luster is currently serving a 124-year sentence in California.
According to Mexican law, bounty hunting is illegal and in September 2006 the three men were arrested by U.S. marshals in Honolulu at the request of Mexico, and awaited extradition to face the charges.
Chapman’s attorney, Brook Hart, would neither confirm nor deny the reports that the charges had been dropped but did say “All I can say is that the order that the Mexican court issued, I'm told, is based upon a finding that the statute of limitations expired and that the attempted further prosecution of the Chapmans is barred by that statute.”
