Sean Penn may be an Oscar-winning actor but it’s his stance against the war in Iraq that has won him praise from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
Chavez has been an outspoken opponent to the Iraqi war and has openly criticized the U.S. for its involvement in the Middle East. In a televised speech on Wednesday Chavez expressed his gratitude towards Penn for standing up to U.S policy saying, “He's one of the greatest opponents of the Iraq invasion.”
Continuing with his speech, Chavez read from an open letter that Penn wrote for U.S. President George Bush in which he condemned the Iraq war and called for the President’s impeachment.
Penn is currently in Venezuela and toured a film studio near Caracas on Wednesday. Chavez said that he had spoken with Penn on the phone and the two had planned to meet on Thursday.
Sean Penn won an Oscar in 2004 for his lead role in “Mystic River.” He was nominated for an Oscar in “I Am Sam,” “Sweet and Lowdown,” and “Dead Man Walking.”
