UN’s Top Climate Change Official Yvo de Boer to Resign

The United Nation’s top climate change official Yvo de Boer has announced he will be stepping down from his position on July 1, five months before 193 countries meet in Mexico for a second attempt at striking a global climate deal.

De Boer has held the position of executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change since being appointed to the post in 2006. The Dutchman said his decision to resign was difficult but told reporters I believe the time is ripe for me to take on a new challenge.”

That decision, according to de Boer, had nothing to do with the failed climate change summit in Copenhagen last December that closed without a binding global accord. While admitting the failed summit was a disappointment de Boer expressed confidence that the November summit could produce more concrete results.

De Boer has said he will become a consultant on climate and sustainability issues for the global accounting firm KPMG.
