General Motors came forward on Thursday with their decision to put close to $500 million in funds toward the development of new Ecotec engines, an undertaking that would generate 550 jobs at the company’s plants.
$425 of the allocated $494 million will go to a GM plant in Tonawanda, N.Y., where engineers will work to increase capacity for Ecotec engine. The plants will take on roughly 470 additional employees.
Elsewhere, a Bay City powertrain plant will receive $10.5-million investment and 15 new jobs on top of their current 312,
In a statement Denise Johnson, who serves as Vice President of labor relations at GM gave some details on what GM is looking to achieve with their new investment and the next generation of Ecotec. “GM is transforming its product portfolio to reduce fuel expectations and emissions, and the next generation Ecotec engine is an integral part of that transformation.”
