Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, is meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday despite protests from China.
Chinese officials have called the Dalai Lama a separatist, considering him a threat to the country, and have warned Obama that meeting with the exiled spiritual leader would cause further tension to an already fragile relationship.
That relationship has taken a hit over several issues including the U.S. sale of arms to Taiwan as well as accusations that China was behind a cyber-attack on the search giant Google. The U.S. has been critical of China’s position at the Copenhagen Summit regarding climate change as well as their stance regarding sanctions against Iran.
Just last year Obama opted not to meet with the Dalai Lama prior to his first trip to Beijing but will receive the spiritual leader at the White House on Thursday. White House spokesman Robert Gibb’s has defended the president’s decision to meet with the Dalai Lama saying he was “an internationally respected religious leader.”
It is believed the Dalai Lama will be asking Obama to assist in finding a solution to the issue in Tibet, one that will benefit both the Tibetan and Chinese people.
