2010 Winter Olympics Figure Skating Men’s Free Skate Start List: Evgeni Plushenko Looks to Defend Olympic Gold, Lysacek and Takahashi in Position to Challenge
The men’s figure skating gold medalist will be crowned on Thursday evening after following the free skate and as it stands defending Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko will know exactly what he needs to do to repeat as he is scheduled to be the last man on the ice.
Plushenko tallied a 90.85 in his short program on Tuesday evening to lead the packed field and while he is a favorite to defend his gold he has plenty of challengers if the Russian is to slip. Chief among those challengers is the American Evan Lysacek who is currently second after posting a personal best 90.30 in his short program. Lysacek will take the ice 19th on Thursday evening, with five more skaters to follow.
Sitting just .05 points behind Lysacek is Japan’s Daisuke Takahashi who put together the short program of his life to be in great position for a medal. Takahashi will be in perfect position to place pressure on Plushenko as he holds ice 22nd, just one skater separating him and Plushenko.
Crowd favorite Johnny Weir has an outside shot at reaching the podium but it will take a flawless free skate on Thursday for the flamboyant skater. His 82.10 in the short program placed him in sixth and there are a number ahead of him who need only put down solid programs to keep him out of the medal race.
