The Southern Input - Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Barack Obama

On June 13-15, 2007, a Mason-Dixon Poll was taken on both the Republican and Democratic candidates in the up coming Presidential election.  Approximately 329 Democrats and 423 Republicans were interviewed for this poll.  A margin of error for the Democratic poll was approximately 5.5 percent.  The margin of error for the Republican poll was only 4.8 percent.

The results in the Democratic race showed Senator Hillary Clinton leading the other candidates.  Senator Barack Obama is, however, ahead of Senator Clinton in the state of South Carolina, by about 9 points.  Senator John Edwards held third place with approximately 12 percent.  Former Vice President Al Gore and Senator Joe Biden, both had 2 percent each.  An astonishing 24 percent were undecided about their candidate choice at this time.

The Republican side showed Senator Fred Thompson ahead of Rudy Giuliani by only 4 percent.  The other results had Mitt Romney with 12 percent of the poll, Senator John McCain had 7 percent and Mike Huckabee with only 5 percent of those interviewed.  This too had an amazing 28 percent of those interviewed as undecided.

This poll was taken three days after Senator Obama campaigned in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  His speech during this campaign tour was aimed at men who are fathering children but not supporting them.  He stated that men need to have the courage to raise their children.

The Mason-Dixon Poll also had a statement about the black voters that were polled in this area.  Senator Obama is holding a 41 percentage to Senator Clinton’s 18 percentages among the black voters in this area.  It is necessary to carry the black voters in South Carolina to have the electoral votes in that state.  This poll shows that it is very possible a minority member will be the next President of the United States.
