Using Polls to Determine Front Runners - Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton

In a day and age where every website seems to sport a poll, it is fair to ask if using polls to determine front runners in the 2008 Presidential election has become little more than an idle pastime, or if the pollsters really do have their fingers firmly on the pulse of the American people. Consider for example Hillary Clinton who finds that Barack Obama is much too close for comfort. USA Election Polls has revealed that while holding on to a precarious lead, the former First Lady’s numbers – while favorable – are showing a decided slip.

National averages that followed a wide variety of recognized pollsters intimate that while starting off strong, she is beginning to lose popularity. Take for example the ABC News poll which credited her with a favorable 41% in January only to indicate a loss of 2% in July. Time Magazine showed her at an all time high of 74.5% in January, but by April she was down to 33%. With Mr. Obama nipping at her heels, these figures should give Hillary supporters pause.

While these are not hard and fast numbers, they do alert those who like to use polls to determine front runners to carefully weigh the odds of Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama when it comes to pigskin politics, and the results of this consideration are obvious: while Barack Obama is careful to embrace the African American vote without alienating the Latino voters, Hillary Clinton has begun to court the female vote as well as independent voters. As it stands, the use of polls is a worthwhile practice when the candidates are trying to formulate their plans of attack as campaign tours are heating up.
