The Republican debate held Sunday morning at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa brought Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, John McCain, Ron Paul and the remaining five candidates to the stage to discuss matters driving the 2008 presidential campaign.
While the debate was to focus on each candidate’s stance involving issues such as abortion and taxes there was a moment when almost all stood in unison against a Democratic rival.
Comments made earlier by Barack Obama expressing a willingness to meet with foreign leaders that have an expressed distaste for American policies as well as comments made about invading Pakistan to track down al-Qaeda not only garnered verbal assaults from fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton, but landed him in hot water with Republicans on Sunday.
Mitt Romney said Obama had “gone from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove in one week” while Jon McCain called the Illinois senator’s comments “naïve.”
Rudy Giuliani appeared to take up for Obama’s comments on Pakistan saying that while he “didn’t express it the right way” the act of attacking terrorist targets inside Pakistan shouldn’t be ruled out.
Texas Representative Ron Paul once again stood his ground on the issues related to the war in Iraq by commenting that the U.S. should withdrawal all troops and pointing out that the United States involvement in Iraq is illegal and that the country entered under false pretenses.
McCain offered a different view stating that U.S. troops were wining the battle and calling the fight a “seminal moment in American history” and that “We must succeed.”
