Tom Glavine became the 23rd pitcher in major league history to win 300 games in his career after pitching 6 1/3 innings giving up six hits and striking out one in the New York Mets 8-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Glavine left in the bottom of the seventh with a 5-1 lead but was forced to watch from the dugout as the Mets bullpen quickly gave up two runs to threaten the lefthander’s second attempt at the historic victory.
New York answered the Cubs two-run inning with a pair in the top of the eighth for a four run cushion and then added another run in the ninth before Billy Wagner was called on to shut Chicago down.
With Glavine sitting in the dugout, Wagner was able to get Mike Fontenot to ground out to second to end the game and Glavine had history.
The two-time Cy Young award winner now has a career mark of 300-197 tying him with Early Wynn and Lefty Grove on the all-time wins list. Glavin sits seven wins shy of Mickey Welch for 20th on the list.
Five times in his career Glavine has won 20 or more games in a season, a career that started with the Atlanta Braves in 1987 when he went 2-4. Glavine followed up with a 7-17 record in 1988.
It could be a while until another pitcher reaches 300 wins. While Randy Johnson is sitting on 284 wins he has suffered back injuries that could prevent him from chasing the milestone. Mike Mussina is the only other active pitcher with as many as 246 wins and he began his career in 1991.
