Clashes in Ivory Coast Leave Several Dead as Security Forces Fire on Demonstrators

Demonstrators rallying against Ivory Coast’s President Laurent Gbagbo were met with live rounds of gunfire from security forces on Friday leaving several people dead and many more injured.

The protests surround Gbagbo’s decision last week to dissolve the country’s government and electoral commission due to concerns over voter registration for the scheduled presidential election. That decision was marked by protests by opposition parties who accused Gbagbo of disqualifying voters from ethnic groups that would not have supported him in the election.

Those protests have boiled over into violence and Friday’s clashes in Gagnoa could spark further scenarios in other areas of the country.
