Woods & Sex Addiction

Tiger Woods’ reported entry into a sex addiction program has shone a spotlight on this little-discussed disorder.

Pro golfer was a notoriously private celebrity – until Thanksgiving weekend 2009. The new reports that followed told personal details of his marriage, his multiple alleged affairs and other salacious details of the popular pitchman’s double life.

Woods laid low through the holidays, while the media speculated about the future of his marriage to model Elin Nordegren, with whom he has two children. He did issue an apology on his website and announced that he’s taking an indefinite leave from his sport.

Then came the reports that Woods had checked into a Mississippi facility for treatment of a sex addiction. While no one from Woods’ camp has confirmed these reports, it has put a spotlight on a disorder that rarely gets much attention. That publicity for a misunderstood problem may be the one positive thing to come out of this whole mess.

Sex Addiction

“Sexual addicts are those who engage in persistent and escalating patterns of sexual behavior acted out despite increasingly negative consequences to self and to others,” according to allpsych.com. “They become addicted to the neuro-chemical changes that take place in the body during sexual behavior.”

The website goes on to say that, sexual addictions are among the least talked about and probably the least understood of all addictions, despite having been around as far as we have recorded history. The lack of knowledge and understanding about it comes from our society’s unwillingness to take an honest and open look at sexuality. Often, the shame associated with sex addiction can lead to other addictive behaviors as well. Fortunately, there is help and treatment has proven effective.
