Evgeni Plushenko entered the 2010 Winter Olympics as the defending gold medalist and when he exited the ice following his free skate program Thursday night he thought he would be a two-time gold medalist but the Russian found himself holding silver after judges scored his performance just below American Evan Lysacek.
Shortly after learning that he would be receiving silver Plushenko stated “I was positive that I won” and there were many who sided with the Russian. The outspoken Plushenko defended his belief by pointing to the quad he landed, something absent from Lysacek’s performance.
While Plushenko thought that jump was enough there were plenty of points during his free skate in which he looked shaky, something Lysacek didn’t display. On a number of jumps it didn’t appear as if Plushenko landed smoothly and he was once again criticized for his transitions.
Lysacek refused to get too involved with the controversy over jumps and transition but did offer a quip, stating “If this were about the jumps, the competition would be to see who has the best jump, and it would last about ten seconds long.”
