In an election where most of the candidates appear to have flawed – or perhaps just human – personal lives, the figure of Newt Gingrich is not as unlikely a candidate as some might imply. On his third marriage with affairs in his past as well as questionable financial dealings while in the House, ordinarily Mr. Gingrich would not fit into the apple pie mentality so many presidential nomination hopefuls are trying to cultivate.
The foregoing notwithstanding, the have been strong and persistent rumors for the past six months that he is close to announcing his run for the republican nomination. It is hard to tell just who is keeping the rumors alive or whether Newt Gingrich is doing little more than a Potomac Two Step, but the numbers compiled on USA Election Polls show him in many cases as having double digits – which is more than some competitors who have announced their candidacy can boast.
While the odds are good that his personal life most likely will not become a campaign issue, the fact that he does not fall in step with the majority of republicans may present a problem should he decide to seek the nomination. In the past he already had to battle those who considered him to be a liability rather than an asset to the GOP, and with his stances on environmentalism and also business related issues, this scenario is likely to see a repeat. Of course, until Mr. Gingrich officially announces his attentions, there is precious little to be gained by speculating.
