Tiger Woods will tee up at the PGA Championship at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Ok. today in hopes of setting the stage for his first major title of the year. Woods tied for second at the 2007 Masters won by Zach Johnson and then finished second at the June U.S. Open, held off by Argentinean Angel Cabrera. Now with one major left on the 2007 plate Woods is trying to capture his 13th major and move one step closer to Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major victories.
But its been an odd year for the big hitters on the PGA Tour and especially at the majors. Johnson’s victory at The Masters and Cabrera’s miracle at the U.S. Open represented their first major victory. The British Open was captured by Irelands Padraig Harrington, his first major victory. If the PGA Championship is won by another first-timer it would be the just the fourth time that the majors were swept by newbies.
If the PGA Championship is won by a first-timer it would also mean that Tiger Woods will be shut out in the majors for the first time since 2004. Woods is the defending champion after winning the PGA Championship by five strokes last year but the question of the heat could come into play this year. Forecasters have predicted temperatures to exceed 100 degrees each day of the tournament.
