The Pittsburgh Steelers received more than 70,000 entries in their name the mascot contest and the winning submission somehow became Steely McBeam. For a franchise that doesn’t even have cheerleaders the idea of a mascot is bad enough but now Steelers fans who have prided themselves on being among the most passionate and hardened in the NFL will have to watch Steely McBeam prance along the sideline and in the stands.
Steely McBeam is an effort to celebrate the Steelers 75th Anniversary and perhaps bring some enjoyment to kids but many of the faithful would have opted for the cheerleaders over the Steelers new mascot.
Diane Roles, the brainchild behind the name, will receive VIP tickets to the Steelers’ home opener on September 16 against the Buffalo Bills. Roles will also be presented with a throwback helmet and jersey.
