The National Hurricane Center upgraded the storm 1,300 miles southeast of Hawaii to Hurricane Flossie after winds were measured at 75 mph with expectations of the severity to strengthen.
According to Richard Knabb of the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Flossie was moving west at approximately 14 mph. It could take up to four days before reaching Hawaii at which time its strength should diminish.
Knabb said that even if Hurricane Flossie does weaken it will still bring heavy rain and surf swells to the island.
