James E. Faust, Second Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died this morning at 12:20. Faust was 87-years-old.
Throughout his distinguished life Faust was noted for his service work both inside the LDS as well as outside. Having served his country in World War II Faust was discharged and finished his studies at the University of Utah, graduating with a B.A. and Juris Doctor. He then became a member of Utah’s House of Representatives from 1949-51. He served as President of the Utah Bar Association from 1962-63.
In 1962 Faust was appointed by then President John F. Kennedy to the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights and Racial Unrest.
Faust continued practicing law in Utah until he was called as an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1972. In 1978 Faust was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He then became Second Counselor in the First Presidency of the LDS in 1995 where he remained until his death Friday morning.
Church officials said that Faust was surrounded by family when he passed away.
