Alexander Haig, Former U.S. Secretary of State, Dies at 85

Former U.S. Secretary of State Alexander Haig died from complications associated with an infection early Saturday morning. Haig was 85.

Haig, a top adviser to three Republican presidents and one-time presidential candidate, had been admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in late January.

The four-star general had been chief-of-staff to President Richard Nixon and remained in that position when Gerald Ford took office following Nixon’s departure due to Watergate. During Jimmy Carter’s presidency Haig became NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, but returned to Washington to serve as secretary of state under Ronald Reagan.

It was during Reagan’s presidency that Haig made perhaps his biggest public relations blunder as he responded to the 1981 shooting of the president by telling reporters he was “in control.” Haig insisted he was only trying to keep the country calm but many saw it as a power move.

Despite the controversy Haig remained a powerful player in Washington and was a central figure during the Cold War build up between the United States and Soviet Union.

In 1988 Haig ran for the Republican presidential nomination but he lost to Reagan’s Vice-President, George H W Bush, essentially ending his political career.
