The republican senior senator from Nebraska defies pigeon holing and while some claim that this will be his very downfall, others allege that it will make for a stunning victory. As this point in time Chuck Hagel has not officially declared his run for the nomination; as a matter of fact, he himself is not quite sure if he has enough support within the GOP to even be seriously considered. This, among other things, has given rise to his contemplating to running as an independent if the time comes.
What makes Chuck Hagel a refreshingly different politician is the notion that his first allegiance is to the country’s Constitution, not to the person holding the office of President or the party that installed him. Needless to say, this has not endeared him with the supporters of the current status quo and administration. Yet in spite of the long history of wrangling with those in power, USA Election Polls features on its website a 12-07-05 Zogby poll that shows him at 1%. This is not a bad showing for someone who is not even running.
As a matter of fact, at that point in time it put him in the same position as Fred Thomson, Sam Brownback, and also Mike Huckabee – and even though the latter is running, Huckabee’s Zogby numbers have only slightly improved in 2007. Perhaps Mr. Hagel will seek the GOP nomination and let the chips fall where they may – at this point in time it is still anyone’s guess.
