Dodgers Win Pitchers Duel vs Cards

Rookie James Loney, just installed as the No. 3 hitter in the lineup, slugged a two-run homer off Adam Wainwright in the ninth inning Friday night to give the Dodgers a 2-1 win over the Cardinals.

Loney followed Russell Martin's one-out single with his fifth home run of the season to give reliever Joe Beimel the win.

Takashi Saito pitched the ninth for his 29th save.

Brad Penny, who lost his previous two starts, started and scattered five singles over seven scoreless innings.

He struck out six and walked three, two in the first inning.

Wainwright was up to the duel with Penny.

He was also assisted by a pair of double plays and ended four innings with strikeouts, including fanning newest Dodgers slugger Mark Sweeney after Andre Ethier's two-out double in the seventh. P>
