NFL Scores from Saturday night’s first week of preseason games.
Charlie Frye completed 12-15 passes and threw for 122 yards as the Cleveland Browns beat the Kansas City Chiefs 16-12. While Frye had a solid game at quarterback it was Chris Barclay’s 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with less than two minutes in the game that gave the Browns the victory.
Trent Green struggled mightily in his Miami Dolphins debut, completing just 6-15 for 60 yards but the Fins managed to score late in the fourth quarter to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 18-17 in South Florida. David Garrard looked impressive for the Jaguars tossing 156 yards on 12-16 passing. Jesse Chatman rushed for 88 yards on six carries, 7 of those yards came on a third quarter sprint for the Dolphins first touchdown.
Aaron Rodgers looked primed for the Packers season as the back-up QB threw for 168 yards and one touchdown on 18-27 passing as Green Bay handled the Pittsburgh Steelers 13-9 in the steel city. Rodgers connected with Carlyle Holiday for a 3-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give the Packers a 10-9 lead and Mason Crosby tacked on a 52-yard field goal six minutes later to complete the scoring.
Vince Young sat on the Tennessee Titans sidelines after violating a team rule and the Washington Redskins were able to score 14 points in the fourth quarter to earn a 14-6 victory Saturday night. Marcus Mason gave the Redskins a 7-6 lead in the fourth with a 1-yard touchdown run and Byron Westbrook recovered a fumble in the Texans’ end zone a minute later to seal the game.
Taye Biddle made the most of his two receptions, turning the pair into touchdowns that covered 108 yards as the Carolina Panthers beat the New York Giants 24-21. Biddle’s first touchdown came on a 23-yard pass from David Carr while his second was an 85-yard pass from Brett Basanez.
The Chicago Bears scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to beat the offensively troubled Houston Texans 20-19. Kyle Orton threw for 151 yards and one touchdown in the Bears win. Robbie Gould kicked a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter, the last coming with less than a minute left in the game.
The Oakland Raiders scored 21 points in the second quarter and then needed a pair of field goals in the fourth to beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. Daunte Culpepper threw for 78 yards in his new role as Raiders quarterback and Adimchinobe Echemandu ran for 75 yards in the win.
