Past Senator Fred Thompson is planning to make his first Iowa tour as a presidential view next week, a growth that is anticipated to reset the Republican field in the caucus state in the arousal of the GOP straw survey in Ames on Saturday.
"Then the campaign for the caucuses begins," said John Maxwell, chief adviser to U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Ia. "There are going to be players leaving the stage after Saturday, and so it is going to be a new lineup."
Thompson is planned to trip the Des Moines region on Aug. 17 and see state legislators and public conservative activists previous to attend the Iowa State Fair, at all times a "must" on the summertime campaign path in Iowa.
The timetable is an indication that Thompson, one of the Republican Party's favorite candidates in Iowa and all over the country, would fight in Iowa's 2008 caucuses, state political viewer and Republican strategists told.
Thompson is likely to officially proclaim his application for the GOP nomination in September. He is not scheduling to be in Ames on Saturday, when some eight of the Republican field's other contenders and hundreds of Iowa GOP stalwarts are likely to be on the Iowa State University site.
Iowa Republicans scheduling to meet up with Thompson told there is still time for this actor as well as politician to gain a grip in Iowa, where the 2008 caucus crusade is seven months in progress.
"I don't think he's too late at all, because from my perspective, I've seen less gravitation of people, especially social conservatives, around one candidate," affirmed Steve Scheffler, president of the Iowa Christian Alliance.
