The National Weather service has put Hawaii under a hurricane watch for Hurricane Flossie. The hurricane, a category 4 now, will reach its closest point to the island by 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday when it will slow down to a category 2.
The hurricane will come in as close as 100 miles to the island. Winds will get up to be 40-50 mph and the surf will rise above 15 feet. Up to 10 inches of rain is expected.
The last known hurricane to hit Hawaii came in 1871. Officials of Hawaii are set to meet and discuss preparations for the storm.
“All the islands of Hawaii are at equal risks for hurricanes. There is still a chance the hurricane could take a jog a bit to the north, but it has been fairly well behaved,” said Ray Tanabe, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service, said of the hurricane.
