Karl Rove resigning from the White House

Chief Political Strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he is resigning from his position in the White House at the end of August.

Rove is President Bush’s close friend and has been with Bush since he first began his political career. Bush has named him “the architect” and “boy genius” for devising the strategy that won him two presidential campaigns.

“I would call Karl Rove a dear friend. I thank my friend. I’ll be on the road behind you in a bit,” Bush said.

Rove, who is called “Bush’s brain” by critics, is following a long line of officials that are leaving the White House in the final months of the Bush administration. “I’m grateful to have been a witness to history,” Rove said. “It has been the joy and the honor of a lifetime.”

“Obviously it’s a big loss to us. He’s a great college, a good friend, and a brilliant mind. He will be greatly missed, but we know he wouldn’t be going if he wasn’t sure it was the right time to be giving more to his family, his wife Darby and their son. He will continue to be one of the president’s greatest friends,” said the White House deputy press secretary, Dana Perino.

Rove said he is not going to work for and presidential candidate in the 2008 election. “We’ve been friends for a long time and we’re still going to be friends,” said Bush.
