Hawaii's Big Island suffered an earthquake 25 miles south of Hilo Tuesday afternoon. The earthquake reached a 5.3 rating on the Richter Scale. It hit 5.8 miles below the surface of the Earth. Fortunately, only minor damage has been reported and there are no signs of a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Category 3 Hurricane Flossie is headed to Hawaii today, so the scare of a tsunami was eminent. In addition to the earthquake and hurricane, Puu Oo, a volcano located on the Big Island, has filled up with hot lava and may erupt soon.
Travel plans throughout the islands have been cancelled due to such inclement weather. The state has declared a state of emergency as well.
