Former MLB Shortstop Jose Offerman Arrested for Assault in Independent League Game

Jose Offerman spent 15 years in a major league baseball uniform playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Minnesota Twins, Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets but it may be his game with the Long Island Ducks in the Independent League that people will remember by.

In Tuesday’s game against the Bridgeport Bluefish the 38-year-old Offerman started his night off on a positive note with a homerun in the first inning. When the Dominican came to the plate in the second inning he fell behind in the count 0-1 but then Bluefish pitcher Matt Beech drilled Offerman in the left calf. Offerman immediately charged the mound with bat in hand.

Offerman then swung the bat at Beech who tried to defend himself with both hands resulting in a broken middle finger on his right hand. Offerman’s backswing also caught the head of Ducks catcher John Nathans who had tried to stop the irate Offerman from reaching the mound.

The game was then delayed nearly 20 minutes as order was restored and Offerman, Beech and Bluefish manager Tommy John were ejected.

Bridgeport police then entered the clubhouse and arrested Offerman for assault. After bond was posted Offerman was released but he is now facing a lifetime suspension from the league.
